Just as society is getting acquainted with 5G, still in its early stages, technology surprises us once again, proving that it never sleeps, never stops, and never takes a break. Enter the much-talked-about 6G, a concept that China introduced even before the widespread adoption of 5G. And now, the birth of 6G is on the horizon, gradually unfolding before our eyes.
And in the face of this new addition to our globalized and hyperconnected society, questions arise: What exactly is the 6G network? What benefits will it bring us? How does it differ from its predecessor? And, most importantly, when will our devices be able to connect to it?
We’ve taken on the role of investigators and we’re excited to share with you all the information we’ve gathered to address these questions and keep up with the ever-evolving world of technology.
It’s the sixth generation of wireless technology and mobile connectivity, and it will provide faster speeds and lower latency – the time that passes between an action and its response. In other words, the goal is to further reduce the communication time within the network, thus increasing transmission speed.
There will be a transitional or intermediate period that mobile companies, like Huawei, have dubbed as 5.5G. Therefore, don’t expect this new network to become a part of our reality anytime soon, as it is projected that the initial use cases will be implemented between 2026 and 2028.
One of the key advantages is that it will significantly speed up everyday tasks. For instance, downloading videos or files will be much faster, thanks to the increased data transmission speed to your computer or mobile device.
This will greatly benefit us when watching videos on streaming platforms like YouTube or Twitch, as well as on OTT platforms like Netflix. With 6G, videos will load faster, and there won’t be any loss of quality in the viewing experience.
But the advantages of this new network go beyond individual everyday tasks and extend to society as a whole and specific economic sectors, including healthcare. In the medical field, for instance, it will offer significant benefits to patients with chronic illnesses or those in need of continuous monitoring. Real-time monitoring will become possible, allowing for timely interventions and responses in emergency situations. For example, implants like valves or pacemakers connected to the network will transmit vital health data to the medical team in real time, enabling them to provide immediate assistance. Moreover, the advent of 6G will contribute to the advancement of artificial intelligence, enhancing its efficiency, reliability, and propelling its automation and evolution.
According to experts, the 6G network is expected to bring about a significant paradigm shift in technology by integrating terrestrial and satellite wireless communications and providing global coverage. The ultimate goal is to connect the entire planet at every level, bridging continents and countries, and even reaching the farthest corners, including rural and isolated communities, as well as maritime transportation.
The main difference between these two networks lies in their speed. In fact, 6G will offer a speed that is a hundred times faster than 5G. But that’s not all. There are other notable improvements as well. For instance, 6G will be more efficient, consuming less energy, while also boasting a higher capacity. This means that it will be able to handle a much larger number of devices simultaneously compared to the fifth-generation network.
Experts predict that the first real-world applications of 6G will emerge between 2026 and 2028, and commercialization is projected to take place in 2030. In fact, countries like South Korea have announced their goal to begin commercializing 6G between 2028 and 2030, with plans for a pilot program in 2026.
